The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, and apps) to clients. At EIU Digital, the technology function in the business, we have three kinds of work, namely strategic projects, changes requests and bug fixes, and operational activities – which deliver products to our subscribers, our online store users and our clients of custom content.


Strategic projects can be 3 – 9 months long, with interim releases and distinct testing phases; smaller changes and bug fixes are bundled into weekly or bi-weekly releases, with testing fitted in. These projects cover the front-end web or other delivery, as well as our backend supporting systems.


We are now seeking a Web UI Developer to develop and maintain websites.


This role will be part of our rapidly growing Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York.


In the role you would be expected to:


Do application development

  • Produce standards-based cross-device interfaces using HTML/CSS/javascript
  • Work with web developers to integrate HTML/CSS/javascript with ASP.NET
  • Evaluate and configure front-end components of third party software and tools
  • Manage team and application dependencies when committing code to source code control (Subversion and GIT)

Carry out project management and planning

  • Work in an Agile Scrum process where team communication and flexibility are highly valued
  • Review and estimate business requirements and user stories
  • Break down user stories into development tasks
  • Participate in design sessions and create technical design documents

Carry out administrative activities

  • Attend EIU weekly staff meetings
  • Attend manager weekly 1-1 meetings
  • Attend daily project scrum meetings

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must have:

  • 3-5 years in a web development role
  • 1-3 years’ experience with advanced CSS including transforms/animation, grid, calc(), multi-column, flex, and shapes
  • 1-5 years’ experience with advanced HTML and associated APIs
  • Understanding of how to build responsive/fluid layouts
  • Knowledge of current web standards, accessibility, SEO, cross-browser issues and usability best practices
  • Knowledge of the Document Object Model and how it affects design
  • Experience with interactive techniques (advanced javascript + jquery, AJAX, mobile devices, etc)
  • Additional experience a plus
    • XML, XSL or structured data formats
    • A clear understanding of the difference between progressive enhancement and graceful degradation

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • High level knowledge of User Interface systems, architecture and languages across a wide variety of devices.
  • Extreme proficiency in optimizing, testing, and debugging said applications to ensure operation, quality and conformance to creative and engineering specifications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of User Interface development techniques, tools, practices and related technologies.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, and be passionate about quality work and strong knowledge of the latest cross-browser/device HTML - CSS - JavaScript technologies and techniques. This includes advanced layout and DOM manipulation and a deep understanding of clear separation of content, presentation and behavior.
  • A clear understanding of the concepts of progressive enhancement, atomic design, and mobile first approaches; and be able use these concepts to implement a responsive layout strategy.
  • Experience in CSS3. He/she will have a working knowledge of CSS pre-processing (LESS, SASS) and experience working with both media and feature queries.
  • The ability to implement a solid semantic HTML markup and advanced CSS framework without a dependence on any particular framework or library.
  • Proficiency in advanced JavaScript syntax and techniques (preferably up to ES6) and have some experience using AJAX, JSON and RESTful APIs
  • Familiarity to use most of the following tools used by EIU Digital:

  • Travel: Some travel to our offices in London and/or New York may be required
