The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, and apps) to clients. At EIU Digital, the technology function in the business, we have three kinds of work, namely strategic projects, changes requests and bug fixes, and operational activities – which deliver products to our subscribers, our online store users and our clients of custom content.


Strategic projects can be 3 – 9 months long, with interim releases and distinct testing phases; smaller changes and bug fixes are bundled into weekly or bi-weekly releases, with testing fitted in. These projects cover the front-end web or other delivery, as well as our backend supporting systems.


Currently we are seeking a Excel & VBA Application Developer to maintain and update EIU’s Content Management & Workflow applications.


This role will be part of our rapidly growing Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York.  


In the role you would be expected to:

Application Development

  • Develop application features in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access, VBA) and MS SQL Server
  • Develop MS Office Add-Ins using VBA and Excel formulae for EIU-specific Content Management and Workflow functionality
  • Develop business data management and reporting features in MS Access and MS SQL Server (data modeling, T-SQL, and SSIS)
  • Develop test harnesses and unit tests to validate developed features
  • Work directly with business users to determine requirements for application features and fixes
  • Communicate with business users to support and resolve application defects
  • Incrementally replace legacy business systems with applications built in the NET development framework

Project management and planning

  • Work in an Agile Scrum process where team communication and flexibility are highly valued
  • Review and estimate business requirements and user stories
  • Break down user stories into development tasks 
  • Participate in design sessions and create technical design documents

Administrative activities

  • Attend EIU weekly staff meetings
  • Attend manager weekly 1-1 meetings
  • Attend daily project scrum meetings

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:


  • 3-5 years experience developing custom desktop applications using Excel, VBA and/or C#
  • 3-5 years experience developing database functionality in MS Access and MS SQL Server
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 2010/2013 (Word, Excel, Access and VBA)
  • Experience with MS SQL Server 2008 (or later)
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows 10 (and later)
  • Additional Experience a plus
    • ASP.NET and ASP MVC development in C#
    • SVN and/or Git source code control


You will be able to demonstrate:


  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (particularly advanced Excel, Word and Access)
  • Proven ability to deliver bespoke solutions to a high quality and to time using appropriate technologies to add commercial value
  • The ability to work with and manage large datasets
  • Ability to extract data from disparate data sources
  • Familiarity with most of the following tools and technology used by EIU Digital:
    • Sketch: Concept, wireframes, high end visual designs
    • Invision App: Prototype creation
    • Slack: Team messaging
    • Replicon: Time tracking & management
    • VersionOne: Agile Project Management tool
    • MS Project: Project Management
    • Google Enterprise: Email, Drive, Calendar, Hang Outs



  • Travel: Some travel to our offices in London and/or New York may be required
  • Hours: Flexibility to work across UK hours, with some crossover to New York
